What is Raya?

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is celebrated on the first day of Syawal which is after the end of Ramadhan’s month.  Muslims celebrate Hari Raya Puasa or also known as the festival of Aidilfitri is determined to cherish the new month after 30 days of fasting days.  Hari Raya last until a month which is equal with Syawal month.

For Muslims, both the festivals of Aidilfitri Festival and Aidiladha Festival are events of showing gratefulness to God and remembering him.  As for the former, it is usually celebrate within large family and also other races and customs especially in Malaysia.  Indian and Chinese are welcome to rejoice the days together with Muslims because Aidilfitri Festival in Malaysia is different as we live in a 1 Malaysia surrounding.

In Malaysia, people will set a time for open house to entertain the guests.  Usually, they will invite close friends, neighbours and relatives.  It is either a big or common open house.  It is a must actually to create this event because it could tighten the bonds among the relatives and friends.  It is familiar to see non Muslims made welcome during Aidilfitri Festival at these open houses as in Malaysia we are grateful enough to actually experience a harmony unity between races and an open house is the evidence to show how well we cooperate with each other.

The special part of open house is for the children as they will be given token sums of money that is known as “duit raya” from the elders or parents.  Nowadays, not only the children are happy to receive “duit raya”, but the teens also could cherish themselves as for me, although I have reached my adulthood, I also received my “duit raya” from the elders.  It was such a delightful moment actually.
